About Us

Our Mission: We seek to provide our clients with the ability to access environments that are typically restricted to major universities- via toolkits, products, and services within geographic information science and technology (GIST). We also aim to provide user intuitive virtual reality (VR) simulations, utilitarian robotics, efficacious sensor systems, robust geodatabases, and high quality holographic, digital, and 3-dimensional (3D) printed models.

Our Goal: Is to promote the next generation of scientific discovery in our solar system-for human exploration and development of space- through robotics, surveying, spatial analysis, geospatial applications development, and commercial astronautics.

The Vision: The scientific community has made enormous strides in the last century. The development and massive proliferation of scientific equipment and knowledge have revealed paradigm-shifting information on science and the environment. The telescope has allowed us to peer deep into the cosmos and understand events from 14.5 billion years ago. Now, thousands of research satellites in orbit allow us to study the effects of deforestation, climate change, land use and land change. The computer allows information to be shared immediately with the scientific community.

However, while we have vast amounts of information on stars light-years away, and hidden civilizations in the jungle, we have comparatively minuscule data on the largest feature of our planet- the ocean. The only tools available to measure the ocean are expensive, difficult to use, and require a high degree of training. They are, therefore, restricted to use by major universities and grant worthy research. The information gathered by the robotic underwater vehicles and diver deployed apparatus is extremely influential, but the value of these vehicles and tools to the general scientific community is hindered by the costs involved in operating and producing them. What our team seeks to do is provide a new underwater vehicle fleet and toolkits to the market that can provide the vast majority of the essential data collection tasks that researchers and citizen scientists need at a significantly lower price than what is currently available. To optimize the value and to help them get the most relevant information, the vehicles and tills we provide will be highly modular, so that not resources are not  wasted on unnecessary equipment, and craft can be modified for mission specific needs.

This affords researchers and citizen scientists access to tools and information at an affordable price. Any materials, systems, and apparatus that are subsequently developed for use in underwater environments can then be extended for deployment in astronautics applications for extravehicular surveys. To promote long-term citizen science and literacy in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, we will produce and provide educational courses and materials on GIST surveys and robotics that at are the core of our company function. The seas and outerspace will become available to any who desire to explore them, opening up the mysteries of the sea to the masses for the first time in history, while promoting climate change resilience for numerous communities. The idea is to produce the model-T of autonomous survey vehicles and global GIST toolkit services, not everyone needs a Cadillac to get from point A to B!

Stephen A. Daire

Co-owner & Chief Executive Officer

Stephen A. Daire became high school Drum Major and an Eagle Scout in 2009. In 2011, he was accepted into Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and Order of the Arrow, Vigil Honor. In 2014, a 3-month University of Montana research trek and Rutgers Scuba courses catalyzed his biogeography, geophysics, and diving interests. In 2015, he completed a Rutgers School of Environmental & Biological Sciences & School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) Evolutionary Medicine graduate certificate (GC) and an Evolutionary Anthropology Bachelor of Science. Mr. Daire’s Geographic Information Science & Technology (GIST) work began with Rutgers Paleoenvironmental Research Laboratory (PERL) volcanic glass polarized microscopic photography methodological improvements, feldspar electron microprobe analysis, and three-dimension (3D) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) geodatabase (GBD) programing.

International underwater sciences cultural and natural (geoheritage) resource management (GRM) work primed him to needs, potentials, limitations, and externalities in mission engineering, contingency planning, emergency response, spatial cognition, crew resource management (CRM), life support systems (LSS), and technical reporting. +160 submerged hours via 132 dives honed Stephen’s skills with Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS), American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), National Geographic Society (NGS), cave, deep, rescue, search, recovery, dry suit, wreck, nitrox, and sidemount scuba training. He completed a GC, 2018, and Master of Science (MSc), 2019, in GIST from University of Southern California (USC) Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI). His underwater laser scanning (ULS), GDB digital elevation modeling (DEM), quantum optic dynamics, and planetary science & technology analog research (PSTAR) promotes astronautic and space technology (AST) research and development

Mr. Daire and Ms. Emery Nolasco founded Protean GIST Solutions in 2018 focusing on PSTAR, GIST and AST aquanautic-to-astronautic R&D for human exploration and development of space (HEDS). They aim to leverage artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), holography, proteomics, 3D printing, and human-robotic synergy to design and produce AST apparatus, courses, and toolkits. Stephen’s reports, Quintana Roo (QR), Mexico cave surveys, Master’s thesis, and Handbook of LSS & Extraterrestrial Environments Chapter: Working Outside of a Space Craft or Space Habitat document his academic and professional evolution over 2014-2019. His works are producing methodology improvements in high-fidelity AST simulations and extravehicular activity (EVAs) via his Protean GIST Solutions PSTAR course design for International Institute for Astronautics Studies (IIAS) Project Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere (PoSSUM) Academy.

Stephen views subaquatic PSTAR as critical to HEDS AST as ecological and environmental coevolution geoanalytics expedite climate change resilience, fortify ‘Mothership’ Earth Systems management, and improve biomimetic LSS loop closure. Mr. Daire aims to begin an evolutionary anthropology with Harvard University, or a dual title applied ocean science and engineering along with aero-astronautic engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology & Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute PhD by 2020. He volunteers and collaborates with Scouts, IIAS, 2G Robotics, New Jersey State Museum (NJSM), QR Speleological Society (QRSS), Instituto de la Prehistoria de América (IPA), and other groups social and scientific developments. Stephen assists NJSM, QRSS, & IPA GRM promoting GIST education, geohazard awareness, public health, emergency response, and dive safety. Stephen enjoys hiking, producing fractal geometric art, and playing saxophone, harmonica, and bass.

Emery Nolasco

Co-Owner & Chief Engineering Officer

I am a Sensor Engineer working for L-3 Ocean Systems. I graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, at University of Merced. As a passionate aquarist, diver, and engineer-my goal is to provide easy access to the ocean and its data thus accelerating advancement, understanding, impact, and concern for it.

My background specializes in Robotics and hands-on fabrication. In High school, I competed in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology) Robotics Competitions 2009 and 2010.  During my college years, I was president of the Robotics team where we competed an Autonomous Land Navigation Vehicle and Heavyweight Combat Robot and hosted numerous circuits workshops. In 2013, I developed a low-cost health monitoring system for UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) as Undergraduate Research Technician for MESA (Mechatronics Embedded Systems and Automation) Labs at UC Merced. In 2014, I was Electronics and Navigation Engineer for NavyGator Inc. and developed a low-cost one person operable, easy to travel with, Autonomous Surface Water Vehicle, with a user interface.

After graduating, I became and Mechanical Engineer for AeroVironment. From my time working for MESA Labs and AeroVironment, I experienced the pioneering process a drone goes from research, government, and to commercial and I see how that process will be applicable to underwater drones.

I joined the Protean team because my life purpose is “For Research, Exploration, and Conservation of the Ocean and its Marine Life”. My purpose was inspired at a young age, when I was taking care of aquariums and learning the lesson that there is way more than meets the eye when it comes to the health of the whole entire ecosystem.  I’m excited to be working with a mission aligning team with complementary skills, enthusiasm, and talent that share the motivation to shed more light on the ocean related issues because I believe that “the more you know, the more you can understand something’s importance”.

I am an Autonomous Vehicle Engineer with  8 years of experience with autonomous robots. I have been excited to help Protean with their mission of mapping and modeling, including mapping the cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula despite the mosquitos and gators.
